Alberta became the first jurisdiction in North America to require large
industrial facilities to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions
by 12 per cent. For the first six months of the regulation, Alberta companies
reduced emissions by 2.6 million tonnes through operational changes and
practices - including better use and re-use of energy - and investing in
verified offsets created by other Alberta projects. That’s the equivalent
of taking 550,000 vehicles off the road in a year. Companies also paid
about $40 million into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund,
which will invest in projects and technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
in the province. Alberta’s regulation and its new climate change strategy
put the province in the company of just a few in the world that are moving
beyond talk to take action. Click here for more information.
