Spring 2004 Success!
Promoting Wild Boar in Japan
While Japanese search for alternative meat protein sources, AIMEX Foods
president Dave Rae provides an answer with high-quality Alberta wild boar.
Japan is a perfect market for wild boar, because this market is very health conscious" explains Rae during his most recent trip to Tokyo. "As wild boar is not fed or medicated with growth promoting hormones it is completely natural. In addition to being chemically free, it contains more iron and protein than a lot of other meat choices, which is in addition to its taste is a feature this market really appreciates."
With the assistance of the Alberta Japan Office and the Agriculture and Food Branch, Rae gave a series of wild boar seminars in Tokyo and Osaka to meat buyers and media. "The response as been very positive," explains Kenji Makise AJO Agri-Food Commercial Officer. "Many of the more than 50 seminar participants were surprised how different wild boar tasted from pork with a more intense sweet, nutty flavor."
Intent on showing Japanese buyers that wild boar is a viable year-round
product and not just a winter stew item; participants were treated to samples
of the meat. As a result, in addition to receiving product facts and information,
participants could easily recognize first-hand how appropriate wild boar
is for Japanese-style of barbequing (yakiniku).
"The Japan Office has been great with setting up the logistics of these seminars. This has been helpful and allows me to focus on the important work of showing our quality-product," says Rae. "Between the AJO, the Agriculture and Food Branch, we have really created a very useful corridor of market information and the challenge is to translate that information into sales."
Buyers are also pleased that AIMEX can provide the meat cut to the specific
and unique Japanese standard, which in general includes more marbling and
that each animal is tested and federally inspected for export.
